The R8 numberplate is normally secured with some self adhesive strips, but I’ve had multiple instances where they melt when on track and the number plate hangs off.
I wanted something more robust and decided to use the rear bumper mounting holes behind the number plate. They are M6 thread, so the plan was to make a spacer that screwed into the hole, securing the bumper and also gave a female thread to secure the numberplate with.
I used a program called OpenSCAD, it’s script based but once the model is created, I can simply change the values of the variables which changes all the dimensions and shape of the model.

As you can see, 6 sided, thinner and smaller top, taller centre and larger diameter, thinner bottom disc all by changing a few numbers. For compex parts it’s no god, but for something like this it’s perfect.

Next was simply a case of uploading the .stl file to a website, they check the model and ensure there are no corrupt or unprintable parts.

A couple of weeks later the spacers arrived. Post printing it appears they are shot blasted, the surface imperfections are expected, the resolution is only +/- 0.3mm and the camera as always does exaggerate these things.

The threads needs a tap and die nut running down them to clean up the printed thread. I considered not having any thread cut in them at all, but cutting from scratch would be more difficult.

You can still see some small marks on the thread but it’s not a problem. Bolts wind in without any resistance and no wobble.

The large hex on the top allows easy tightening of the spacer. The shaft is 10mm a/f and I planned to use a 10mm spanner, but it would catch on the bumper, so the 12-sided hex head and a 30mm socket, tightened by hand did the job

The number plate secured with a couple of plastic screws, the numberplate is spaced off from the bumper slightly, this was intentional. I could have made the spacers shorter, but that reduces the available thread for the securing screws.

I’ve 3D printed things myself, but obviously don’t have the facility to print metal. Doing it online was so simple and the bit that made me smile the most, they are titanium ! Complete overkill having 15g numberplate holders, but it’s 3D printed titanium, how cool is that !
